The African proverb, “it takes a village to raise a child” expresses that it takes many people to provide a safe, healthy environment for children. An environment where children are given the security they need to develop and flourish and realize their hopes and dreams. Some fail to appreciate their safe, healthy and loving environment, others have no idea that it even exists.
Growing up in the inner city, my family and I did not have much financially. However, we were rich in love and support. My mother was the primary bread winner while my dad did the side hustle. Providing for 5 children was very difficult; however, we were blessed with community and support. If any adult in my community caught me doing ANYTHING inappropriate, I was immediately checked and checked again by my mother after she heard about it. No need to explain what I mean by “checked”. It was a blessing to be surrounded by aunts, uncles, neighbors, teachers and church family members that required being respectful, law abiding, hard-working members of the community. I didn’t necessarily appreciate it at the time. I have certainly come to appreciate it down through the years. In today’s world you had better not speak or even look at a relative or neighbor’s child as if to correct them. And now…. things are out of control.
